Steve Bauer – Coach Consultant

Steve Bauer was born in St. Catharines and raised in Fenwick, Ontario where like many young Canadians he grew up playing hockey. It wasn’t until the age of 16 that he began to pursue cycling as a sport. In the spring of 1977 he joined the Canadian National Track Cycling team as a junior. After racing at the Track World Cycling Championships in Vienna, Austria and San Cristobal, Venezuela as a senior Steve fully committed to a professional career in cycling. Between 1981-1984 Steve road with GS Mangonie where he was mentored and trained like a pro by founder Fred Mengonie. In 1985 Steve made his debut riding at the Tour de France as a first year pro with the La Vie Claire Team.

Throughout his career Steve has brought recognition to Canada on the international cycling stage. He’s won a silver medal at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games Road Race, and a bronze at the Professional Road World Championship in Barcelona, Spain. Over his career Steve has participated in 11 Tours from 1985 to 1995. In 2005 he was inducted to the Canadian Olympic Sport Hall of Fame and Canadian Sport Hall of Fame.

After retiring in 1996 Steve has remained an active member of the cycling community. He co-founded Steve Bauer Bike Tours, based in St. Catharines and along with Josee Larocque founded Cycle Sport Management, which built Canada’s first ever continental professional road men’s cycling team from 2008 to 2012. Currently Steve heads the direction of the National Cycling Institute Milton at the Mattamy National Cycling Centre in Milton, Ontario.

Chris Reid – Executive Director

Chris has spent over two decades in the sport of cycling at all levels and across disciplines. Prior to joining the NCIM, he helped build the most successful Women’s Road Team in Canada for five years. He has raced his bike across North America, Australia and Asia and brings a perspective that’s grounded in experience.

Chris spent nearly a decade in the Federal Government working as a Senior Policy Analyst first for Natural Resources Canada and later for Environment and Climate Change Canada.

Chris’s overarching goal for the NCIM is to take full advantage of the world-class opportunity the Mattamy National Cycling Centre provides to strengthen and build Canada’s cycling culture at all levels.

David Jack – Coach

David has been involved in bike racing since 1986. He represented Team Ontario as an Elite athlete and was short listed for Canada’s National Team in track cycling. Earning a degree in kinesiology Jack worked in sport medicine before travelling to Japan to teach English.

There, he continued to race road and track and for two years trained daily with professional Keirin competitors at Matsuyama. Jack taught physical education at a military school for twelve years and currently coaches provincial to World cycling champions as well as athletes in a variety of sports, all who strive to achieve a higher level of performance.
 
As a Masters athlete, Jack won the Masters World Games time trial in Edmonton, Alberta and has been on the podium multiple times at the national and provincial level for both track and road. He actively assists in coaching development riders with Team Ontario and was recently the assistant coach for Team Canada at the Jr. World Track Championships in Montichiari Italy.
 
Jack holds a seat on the Ontario Cycling Association’s high-performance committee and is in charge of the HP Pathway program at the NCIM.
 
David is NCCP Level 3 Certified and is currently working on his Advanced Coaching Diploma.

Chantal Thompson – Coach

Chantal began a lifelong interest in cycling at 11 years old when she first started road riding. She is a Provincial Commissaire in Road, Track and Cyclo-Cross and has worked National and International events including the 2015 Pan/Para PanAm games, 2017 Invictus Games and 2017 Track World Cup. In the fall of 2016, she received Ontario Cycling Association’s Contributor of the Year Award as recognition of her contribution to road and track cycling and in the fall of 2017, she was elected onto the Ontario Cycling’s Board of Directors.

Chantal started working at the Milton Velodrome when it first opened and is now responsible for developing and implementing a full program of track cycling, ranging from introductory to more advanced training for participants of all ages. While finalizing her Level 3 (Competition Development) coaching certification, she spends time mentoring coaches and athletes during the OCA Rising Stars and Excellence Camps and is one of 3 derny certified coaches working at the track.

Murray Solem – Coach

Murray Solem is the Ontario Paracycling Coach.  Murray is a multiple medalist on the track in all disciplines.  Murray attended the Athens Paralympics as Pilot for Team Canada.  Murray is also a CrossFit Coach.

Roy Till – Coach

Roy is an NCCP Competition Intro (including Junior Certified) Triathlon Coach and an NCCP Competition Intro Cycling Coach for Road and Track cycling. He is involved in coaching all of the various programs at the MNCC. He has been a Triathlon Coach at McMaster University since 2006 and has been recognized as the “Instructional Coach of the Year” on two occasions. He is a Youth Development and Race Cycling coach for a local cycling club. In another life he directed a multi-disciplinary medical assessment clinic and consulted to the Minister of Finance on auto insurance related issues.

Alana Ziobroski – Coach

Alana Ziobroski began racing triathlon and road cycling at the age of 11 and she also discovered track cycling at a young age. Alana still races in the Ontario Circuit today.  Alana is a certified cycling coach who has been working with cyclists since 2012 and in 2017 she began coaching on the track.  Alana enjoys working with riders from all backgrounds with a special focus on female and youth development in the sport.   Alana is passionate about the sport of cycling and enjoys introducing new riders to the sport.

Josee Larocque – Coach

Josee has been working at the Mattamy National Cycling Center as a coach since its opening.   Over the past two decades, she has been involved with and working in the many facets of cycling.  She has a broad set of experiences and knowledge in the sport through many leadership positions and projects as an athlete, organizer, director and manager, in a variety of cycling’s disciplines, provincially and internationally.  Sports in general have been part of her life from a very young age. She competed in many sports, including swimming, snowshoeing, basketball, volleyball, track and field and road and mountain cycling.  Josee has applied the Long Term Athletic Development pathway in her own development as an athlete and with the athletes she directed and coached.  Since 1999 until present, she fulfilled contracts for various types of sport-based companies such as race and event organizers, bicycle manufacturers, consumer shows, tour operators, and club and professional cycling racing teams.  She worked closely with cycling athletes for more then 12 years in the roles of manager, director and coach.  She developed an extensive acuity of sports’s event management through her sport involvement and inclusive experiences from her education, volunteer and work.

Josee was the first ever woman to complete the UCI Sport Director programme and obtain certification.  In addition, she holds many NCCP designations and is also a Track Commissaire.

Sarah Mason – Coach

Sarah began cycling in 2011 at the Forest City Velodrome as cross training for her other sport; speed skating. Cycling quickly took over as her main sport and she’s loved it ever since. She quickly went on to compete for Canada at the Jr Pan American Championships in 2012 and 2013, bringing home a jersey and 2 silver medals. Sarah has been a Provincial Champion in track, road and time trial multiple times and a National Champion once on the track. The best part of competing for Sarah was the chance to travel the world and meet amazing people (her favourite place to ride was Belgium).

Sarah started working with NCIM the summer of 2018 and has loved every minute of it! She particularly likes watching new riders discover their ability to ride the track, and teaching others race tactics. When she’s not at the track, Sarah is working on her fourth year of Bsc Honours Kinesiology at Western University, and is working on finalizing her Intro to Competition coaching certification.

James Layfield – Coach

James Layfield has been cycling for over 35 years.  An experienced racer in MTB, Triathlon, Duathlon, Road and Track Cycling.   James is a Certified HiiT  coach with PowerWatts International and has been the Lead Coach at PowerWatts Oakville since 2012. James is a founding member of the Coast to Coast Against Cancer Foundation, one of the leading bike charities in Canada.  James has been an integral participant in multiple CTACF events since 2002, raising funds for paediatric oncology initiatives across the country.

Richard Froner – Coach

Richard has been involved in cycling for as far back as he can remember, starting with spectating and cheering his father on in bike races in Ontario in the 1970’s. He began his racing career in 1979, racing for 17 years as a top level cadet, junior and elite until 1995, including a short stint on the Canadian National Team in 1989. A former junior and elite, Provincial and National Champion on the road and track, he has a wealth of experience and knowledge in the sport. After a short layoff spent building a successful small business, Richard has returned to the sport that has been his passion since childhood. He has spent time recently, managing and racing for one of Toronto’s longest active cycling clubs, as well as coaching on one of Ontario’s premier youth cycling teams. He is currently a NCCP Trained, Intro to Competition coach and is working on his
final certification.

Shari Pay – Coach

Shari trained as a British Cycling (BC) Level 2 Coach when living in the UK.  As a volunteer coach, Shari was invited to participate in several National and Regional talent youth camps including:  BC Track Sprint Schools (Newport & Manchester velodromes) and BC Regional Schools of Racing (track, MTB and Road).  She was a team assistant at Revolution – the UK’s elite track cycling series held at Manchester velodrome.  Shari managed a youth MTB race team for 3 years representing central region at the 2011 Youth School Games.  Shari also helped organize races and worked as a volunteer judge and timer.

Shari rode with West Drayton MTB Club in London, England and competed in mountain bike, cyclo-cross, road time trials and sportives.   She had many podium finishes and won the women’s open Southern XC MTB series in 2012.

Shari’s family moved back to Canada in 2015 and she continues to work as as a fitness, spin and yoga instructor, personal trainer and track cycling coach.  Shari is also a level C Track Commissaire.
