Skills definitions:

SKILL LEVEL 0

  • Ability to ride a bike

SKILL LEVEL 1

  • A certification issued by the NCIM
  • Able to ride at a consistent pace, on the black line, 1 meter of separation
  • Must demonstrate shoulder checking and execute proper exchanges

SKILL LEVEL 2

  • A and B certification issued by the NCIM
  • Able to ride at a consistent pace, on both black and blue lines, 1 foot of separation
  • Must demonstrate proper shoulder checking, safe exchanges, decision making skills and safe passing behaviour

SKILL LEVEL 3

  • Skill Level 2
  • Plus: Demonstrates the ability to ride in a group or bunch while maintaining a safe line
  • Plus: Riders must be able to safely move around within a bunch of riders
  • Plus: Riders demonstrate ability to pace themselves during various efforts

SKILL LEVEL 4

  • Skill Level 3
  • Plus: Riders will be able to launch attacks, demonstrate overall comfort riding in group/race scenarios including situational awareness

SKILL LEVEL 5

  • Skill Level 4
  • Plus: Athlete possesses strong competitive racing skills and race situational awareness

Power Definitions:

(NOTE these are general guidelines.  Riders are typically able to ride faster on the Velodrome Track than outdoors due to track surface and lack of environmental effects (eg; wind):

POWER LEVEL 0

  • Ability to ride bike, but no experience with sustained efforts

POWER LEVEL 1

  • Ability to cycle at a speed of 25km/hr on the track for 5 consecutive minutes

POWER LEVEL 2

  • Ability to cycle at a speed of 25km/hr on the track for 10 consecutive minutes

POWER LEVEL 3

  • Ability to cycle at a speed of 30km/hr on the track for 15 consecutive minutes

POWER LEVEL 4

  • Ability to cycle at a speed of 35km/hr on the track for 20 consecutive minutes

POWER LEVEL 5

  • Ability to cycle at a speed of 40km/hr on the track for 20 consecutive minutes

NCIM’s programs are suited to various levels of skills and speed in order for all riders to be able to find the right class for them whether they are brand new to cycling, or a world class track cycling racer.
