A special note from Chris Reid:

Last fall the velodrome lost a keystone of its community in the passing of Kelyn Akuna.   Kelyn was the connective tissue of the track in Milton- whatever you needed, whatever problem needed fixing Kelyn was the guy.  Drop ins? Kelyn fixed them.  Track rentals? Kelyn booked them.  Need to take a coaching course? Kelyn taught them.  Trying to get tandem bikes so Ghana could compete at the Para Worlds? Kelyn found them.

I had known Kelyn for a long time.  I have met few people as passionate about trying to grow the sport of track cycling and celebrating its history as Kelyn.  When I first met Kelyn in Vancouver he was a young American sprinter who had come up to train in Burnaby away from his federation’s politics. And he stayed on to become an integral part of that community before moving east and helping to build ours.

Kelyn was a sprinter and he loved those events, they were his passion.  But he also loved getting new riders excited and passionate about racing.

So we’re going to have a keirin.  And I hope to grow it over time.  But it’s also going to be for everyone.  All riders in all categories will get two rides.  We’ll have some primes, and maybe some small prizes.  And we’ll have some fun.

But we’re also going to try and do something to give back to the Akuna family.  As many of you know Kelyn had two small sons.  We will have a donation box accepting funds.  Having spoken with the family those funds will go towards sports programing for the boys as things start to open up in the world.

Hope to see everyone Saturday night. Let’s remember Kelyn, and moreover lets celebrate him.

Let’s go fast and turn left.
